Relationships: Communication and Emotions – Dublin Life Coach

Emotions

Dublin Life Coach Our emotions influence how we communicate with people.  You may find that you argue frequently with your partner or find it difficult to communicate with the people that you work with.  Most of how we communicate comes from how we are feeling emotionally, so it is important that when emotions are high, that we have the skills to communicate effectively.  Often we can say the wrong thing and end up hurting ourselves or the people around us.

How emotions and feelings affect communication and relationships

Have a look at the people below where we can see how emotions have a direct effect on our personal and work lives.

John is  an even tempered man, who doesn’t believe in expressing too much emotion.  His friends describe him as cold.  Although he loves his wife, he is not able to express it, and keeps his affection at a distance.  Although he works hard, he doesn’t get promoted as his boss does not think that he has the ability to motivate colleagues.  He is surprised when his wife leaves as they never argued or disagreed.

Karen is well respected and popular in her community  At home, she has a temper and often has loud outbursts of anger.  Her family is at a loss to understand what makes her angry and is hurt that she is funny and kind with work colleagues and friends. Karen finds it difficult to work with her colleagues and has lost some jobs due to her temper and not being able to work well in teams.

Both Karen and John find it difficult to manage their emotions effectively and do not have the right emotional tools to communicate effectively with people.

Emotional awareness is a skill that can be developed.  For more information on emotional awareness, have a look at the posts on emotional intelligence.
