CBT for anxiety

Counselling Psychologist Dublin

Everyone feels anxious and under stress from time to time. Situations such as meeting tight deadlines, important social obligations or driving in heavy traffic, often bring about anxious feelings. Such mild anxiety may help make you alert and focused on facing threatening or challenging circumstances. On the other hand, anxiety disorders cause severe distress over a period of time and disrupt the lives of individuals suffering from them. The frequency and intensity of anxiety involved in these disorders is often debilitating. But fortunately, with proper and effective treatment, people suffering from anxiety disorders can lead normal lives.

How can Cognitive Behavioural Therapy Help?

We work together to help you identify your beliefs about your worries and what is underlying your symptoms of anxiety.  This will enable you to see the difference between productive and unproductive worrying.  During counselling you will learn how to overcome activities, thoughts  and aspects of life that you may be avoiding.  You will be taught muscle relaxation and use Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction techniques to help you stop the worrying thoughts that you may be experiencing.  In addition, time management may be introduced and we will work to treat insomnia if your anxiety is interrupting your sleep.

CBT will also look at “mistakes” you may be making in your thinking, for example, you may “jump to conclusions” or engage in black and white thinking, or constantly see only the negative aspects of life, and blame yourself when things go wrong.  You may find that you always expect things to go wrong for you.  Using CBT you will be able to understand the difference between these common thinking errors and reality.
