I want to have CBT
Psychology is one of the core professions for CBT
CBT is also different to counselling which is meant to be non-directive, empathic and supportive. Although the CBT therapist will offer support and empathy, the therapy has a structure, is problem-focused and practical. Counsellors are trained to use models of therapy that do not give advice and are not as structured as CBT.
Counsellors are not normally trained in CBT. If your counsellor has a certificate or diploma in CBT, please check where this was obtained from. If your counsellor advertises themselves as a CBT therapist or offering CBT, there are stringent training standards that must be met in order to make such claims, please ensure that your counsellor meets them. I would suggest if you wish to choose a counsellor for CBT you check that their training has been one of the courses recommended by BABCP. The BABCP sets out the minimum standards for CBT therapist.
If you wish to receive CBT from a non core professional (psychologist, psychiatrist) I would advise you to check if your counsellor has achieved the minimum training standards, the courses accredited in Ireland are;
Hdip in Behavioural and Cogntivie Psychotherapy; MA in Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapy
University College Cork
Postgraduate Diploma in Cogntive Psychotherapy
Trinity College Dublin
