Psychologists are experts in therapy, combining counselling and psychotherapy skills with an in depth knowledge of psychology. Psychologists have a least two and usually three degrees in psychology up to Doctoral level and their training lasts a minimum of 6 years.
Like a counsellor, psychologists work with life events such as grief and loss. But unlike a counsellor, psychologists are also trained to work with clinical and mental health difficulties such as Anxiety, Depression, Panic attacks, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Eating Disorders, Personality Disorders. Unlike counsellors, psychologists are trained and used to working with more complex issues.
You do not want to waste time – You want to get to the root of the problem and resolve it quickly and effectively. Going to a Psychologist can sometimes be time and cost efficient because often issues can get resolved quicker.

You are looking for Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) – Psychologists are one of the few professions expertly trained in CBT. (As well as other forms of therapy). Counsellors and Psychotherapists are not usually CBT trained.
A counsellor works in a “non-directive” way which means that they do not give advice and the session is led by the client. A psychologist will start with an assessment, an understanding of the difficulties you have. They will then provide a formulation which is an explanation of how and why your difficulty started. The formulation then allows the psychologist to plan and implement the most effective therapy for you depending on how your problem arose and how it is affecting you today.
